Almond blossom in Mallorca: when, where, and as a private day

Mallorca's almond trees usually flower from late January to early or mid-March, and February is the safest month to come. The east and the inland villages around Sineu tend to go first, the west follows. There is no fixed date: winter cold and rain move it by weeks from one year to the next.

01When they flower: a window, not a date

In a normal year the first flowers open between late January and early February, and the white lasts into March. The island doesn't flower all at once, though. Mallorca Magazin reports that it usually starts on the east coast, around Porto Cristo, and inland around Sineu and Maria de la Salut, with the west behind.

Some years break the pattern. In 2023 there were flowers in early December. In 2026 the blossom came early around Palma, and IRFAP, the agricultural research institute of the Balearic agriculture department, put it down to an early build-up of winter cold: the trees reached their chill hours sooner, and the mild days that followed opened the flowers ahead of time.

For a trip, that means booking the week rather than the day. Come in February and you will almost certainly find almond trees in flower somewhere on the island; what nobody can tell you in October is where. The local press reports the first sightings every winter, and it is worth checking a few days before.

02The roads with the most almond trees

A lot of it can be seen from a car: the trees come right up to the roadside. On the Sóller road, near Bunyola, the stretch between Raixa and the Jardins d'Alfàbia is one of the best known. Further west, the Ma-1031 from Es Capdellà to Andratx and the road from Santa Ponça to Es Capdellà run between almond estates.

The middle of the island has the most. Marratxí, Consell, Santa Maria, Sencelles, Lloseta, Selva and Moscari have orchards on both sides of the back roads, and the Ma-3240 between Sineu and Costitx crosses the plain in full flower. In the south, try the lanes around Llucmajor, the Ma-14 near Felanitx and the road from Cala Santanyí to Santanyí.

You can see them without leaving Palma, too. Behind the monastery at Es Secar de la Real there is a large field open to the public; at Son Espanyol you can park at ParcBit and see several orchards without much walking, and Son Sardina has a few good spots.

03Why the island is covered in almond trees

Until the end of the 19th century Mallorca was vine country. Phylloxera arrived in 1891, killed the vines within a few years, and farmers replanted with almonds, which paid sooner. That is where the white February landscape comes from; the wine side of the story is in our article on the island's wineries.

The almond now has its own protected geographical indication, "Ametlla de Mallorca", registered in the EU in 2014. Its specification covers the whole island and records that almonds then took up 49.7% of the island's fruit-tree land. February's flowers are harvested as almonds between the second half of August and the end of October.

04The almond blossom fair in Son Servera

Son Servera holds its Fira de la Flor d'Ametler on the first Sunday of February at Cases de Ca s'Hereu, an 18th-century estate: stalls of products made from the almond and its flower, traditional dancing and old farm machinery. In 2023 the town hall showed the 32 almond varieties grown locally and counted around 3,000 visitors; in 2026 the fair was on 1 February.

The 2027 date hasn't been published yet. If it fits your plans, we check it with the town hall before fixing the day.

05Seeing them on a private day with a driver

Because the blossom moves, the thing that helps most is not fixing the route from home. On a private day the route is decided a few days before, once it is clear which area is in flower that week: Bunyola and the Sóller valley if the west is early, the plain and Sineu if it is the centre, or the east with the Son Servera fair if it falls on the Sunday. Your driver collects you from the hotel and stops wherever you want the photo, with no hunting for a parking spot on narrow lanes.

As a published reference, a four-hour private day with a driver and hotel pick-up starts at €550 for one to three people and €620 for four to six, per vehicle; each extra hour is €110.

Days in January, February and March are booked on request, with no guaranteed dates: send us the day and the number of people and we confirm availability and a firm price within 48 hours.
