01What the tour covers, and why in that order
Four stops, of two different kinds. Valldemossa and Deià are villages: you walk them, go inside things, eat something. Son Marroig and Torre des Verger are viewpoints: you arrive, you look, you move on. The Serra de Tramuntana has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, and the Ma-10 is the road that runs the whole length of it from south-west to north-east.
The route is not a loop. It is an out-and-back on the same road: Valldemossa first, Deià as the far point, then Son Marroig on the way back and, past Valldemossa to the south-west, the Torre des Verger at Banyalbufar. The order is not cosmetic. The two villages come early, while there is still somewhere to leave a car, and the two viewpoints come late, when the light has dropped.
02The five hours, broken down
Approximately: half an hour from Palma up to Valldemossa, about fifteen minutes from Valldemossa to Deià on the coast road, and roughly forty minutes back to Palma from the Torre des Verger. With the legs in between, close to two of the five hours are spent in the vehicle. Pick-up is at your hotel, so if you are not staying in Palma those figures move, up or down.
That leaves about three hours on the ground: a little over an hour in Valldemossa, another in Deià, and the rest split between the two viewpoints. What does not fit into five hours is Sa Calobra: thirteen kilometres of hairpins down and thirteen back up, close to an hour each way. If you want to stretch the day, an extra hour costs €110.
03Driving it and looking at it are not compatible
The Ma-10 is narrow, with tight bends and low walls, and it is shared with coaches, cyclists and hire cars crawling along looking for somewhere to pull in. Whoever is driving sees tarmac, the mirror and the car ahead. That is the part that never appears in a photograph and the part that decides how the day is remembered: between Valldemossa and Deià the landscape goes past the window, and the driver is the one person in the car who does not see it.
There is a second, more prosaic effect. The driver does not drink at lunch, calls time on the day earlier than everyone else, and gets back to Palma tired from a road that demands constant attention. With a driver, the car becomes part of the visit instead of the toll you pay for it. That is the honest case for the private tour, and it has nothing to do with luxury.
04Parking is the real bottleneck
In season, the car parks at Valldemossa and Deià fill by mid-morning. Valldemossa has paid parking at the entrance to the village and it takes the coaches; Deià has no large car park at all, so cars end up strung along the road that runs through the village, which in July and August means circling or leaving it far off and walking up.
With a driver the problem goes away for a mechanical reason rather than a magical one: the vehicle does not need a space at the same moment you do. It drops you in the village, pulls away and collects you wherever the walk ends. The viewpoints work the same way: Son Marroig has its own car park off the Ma-10 and the Torre des Verger a small one at the roadside, and at both the difference between stopping and not stopping is usually arriving while they are still empty.
05What it costs and what it does not include
The price is per vehicle, not per head: €830 for one to three people and €910 for four to six, with a maximum of six passengers. For a couple that is €415 each; for three, about €277; with a full group of six, about €152 a person. An extra hour is €110, and the price includes driver and concierge, with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel.
It does not include meals or entrance tickets. Son Marroig is a house-museum with paid admission and is worth budgeting separately. For a single day, one or two weeks' notice is usually enough; between June and September, allow four to six if you also want a table booked in Deià. We come back on a first enquiry within 48 hours.
