Catamaran charter in Mallorca with a skipper: boats, prices and when it pays

The skippered catamarans we have in Mallorca and Ibiza, their day rate from each listing, and how a day on a catamaran differs from one on a motor boat.

In Mallorca, a 12 to 13-metre catamaran with a skipper starts at €1,146 a day in our catalogue (Fountaine Pajot Isla 40, VAT included), for 11 or 12 guests by day. Fuel is extra, at actual consumption. Above that sit the big ones in Ibiza: a 23.60-metre Sunreef 70 from €9,350 a day and the Lagoon 82 'Imladris', with four crew and a chef, from €12,999.

Why a catamaran rather than a motor yacht

A catamaran sits on two hulls. At anchor it moves far less than a monohull, and that matters for what a boat day in Mallorca is mostly about: lunch on board, swimming, lying on the foredeck net. If anyone in the group gets seasick, it is the boat to look at first.

The other advantage is deck space. A 12-metre catamaran has the cockpit and saloon on one level and plenty of flat space for its 11 or 12 guests, more than a motor yacht of the same length.

What it lacks is speed. A 40-foot sailing catamaran is slow, so the day works better with a short, well-chosen route (Portals Vells and El Toro in the south-west, or the south-east coves) than trying to go far. For Formentera in a day, a fast yacht is still the answer.

The Mallorca catamarans, one by one

Fountaine Pajot Isla 40, from €1,146 a day (VAT included). 11.93 metres, four cabins plus a smaller one, two bathrooms, up to 12 guests by day and two crew. Air conditioning, watermaker, snorkelling gear and a paddle board. Its draught of 1.21 metres, per the listing, lets it anchor close to the sand.

Nautitech 42, from €1,600 a day. 13 metres, up to 12 guests and two crew.

Lagoon 40, from €1,990 a day (VAT included). 12 metres, built 2021, four cabins, up to 11 guests and a skipper. It is the boat on the cover.

The departure marina for each is confirmed with the quote, together with the day's route. The fleet usually leaves from Puerto Portals, Port Adriano, Palma and Port d'Andratx.

The Lagoon 82 'Imladris', based in Ibiza: 24 metres, four crew and a chef on board.

The big ones, in Ibiza

For groups after a different class of day, or nights on board, the catalogue's two large catamarans are in Ibiza. The Sunreef 70 'YOLO' is a 23.60-metre sailing catamaran from 2022: 12 guests by day and 8 overnight in four en-suite cabins, from €9,350 a day plus VAT.

The Lagoon 82 'Imladris' is 24 metres long with four crew including a chef, four en-suite cabins and a full set of water toys. From €12,999 a day including VAT; fuel is extra, and the listing puts it at around 250 litres a day.

From Mallorca they combine with a helicopter hop or a fast yacht to Ibiza; our island hopping article explains how.

What the day includes and what is extra

Every boat goes out with a skipper: we don't do bareboat catamarans, so no licence is needed. The day rate covers the boat and its crew. Fuel is billed separately at actual consumption, and on a sailing catamaran that motors little it usually weighs less than on a fast yacht. Any berth at the destination is also extra.

On multi-day charters an APA is added: a fund for food, drinks and berths, usually 25 to 35% of the boat price, settled against receipts at the end.

The sailing season runs from May to October. July and August book up weeks ahead; June and September have the same sea with emptier coves.

What people ask us most

How much does it cost to charter a catamaran in Mallorca?

In our catalogue, from €1,146 a day for a Fountaine Pajot Isla 40 with skipper and VAT included, up to 12 guests. The Nautitech 42 starts at €1,600 and the Lagoon 40 at €1,990. Fuel is extra, at actual consumption.

Do I need a licence to charter a catamaran?

No. All our catamarans go out with a skipper, and we don't offer bareboat charter.

How many people fit on a catamaran?

The 12-13 metre catamarans in Mallorca take 11 or 12 guests by day. To sleep on board, the Sunreef 70 in Ibiza has 8 berths in four cabins.

Catamaran or motor yacht?

A catamaran if the plan is anchoring, lunch on board and swimming, or if someone gets seasick: it moves less and has more deck. A motor yacht if you want to go far in a day, to Formentera for example.
